Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), joined forces with the Ga Mantse, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and Osu Klottey Municipal Assembly on Saturday, July 13, 2024, to undertake a joint clean-up exercise in Accra’s Central Business District. This initiative was a testament to the power of collaboration and volunteerism in driving positive change in our communities.

The joint effort aimed to promote cleanliness and sanitation in the bustling business hub Accra, highlighting the importance of collective action in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. By working together, the participants demonstrated that volunteerism is a vital component of community development and environmental sustainability.

Frederick Boadi Kwaning, Executive Director of Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana, outlined the NGO’s objectives, emphasizing the need for a multifaceted approach to promoting sanitation and hygiene practices in Ghana. “We aim to promote sanitation and hygiene practices among Ghanaians, particularly in working environments,” Mr. Kwaning stated. “A clean environment is essential for productivity, health, and overall well-being, and we believe that volunteerism is a key driver of this process.”

The essence of volunteerism lies in its ability to bring people together around a common goal, fostering a sense of community and social responsibility. By volunteering their time and effort, individuals can make a tangible impact on their environment and contribute to the greater good. In the context of environmental sanitation, volunteerism is crucial in mobilizing communities to take ownership of their surroundings and work towards a cleaner, healthier future.

The NGO seeks to promote sanitation and hygiene practices in communities and workplaces, recognizing that a clean environment is essential for economic growth and development. By educating the public on proper waste management and environmental conservation, Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana aims to empower individuals and communities to take action against filth and neglect.

Collaboration with stakeholders is another key objective of the NGO, highlighting the importance of partnerships in driving positive change. By working with local authorities, businesses, and community groups, Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana can leverage resources and expertise to create a lasting impact.

Empowering individuals to take ownership of their surroundings and promote cleanliness is also crucial, as it fosters a sense of personal responsibility and community pride. When individuals feel invested in their environment, they are more likely to take action to protect and preserve it.

Mr. Kwaning urged Ghanaians to embrace cleanliness and make it a habit, emphasizing the role of individual action in driving collective change. By making small changes to our daily habits, such as properly disposing of waste or participating in community clean-up initiatives, we can contribute to a larger movement towards a cleaner, healthier Ghana.

Madam Mavis Kennedy, Board Chairperson of Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana, emphasized the importance of proper sanitation practices, citing Ghana’s position as the gateway to Africa. As a nation, we have a responsibility to showcase our commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.

However, Madam Kennedy also highlighted the challenges facing the organisation, including limited funding, inadequate waste management infrastructure, and limited access to resources and logistics. Despite these challenges, the NGO remains committed to its mission, recognizing the transformative power of volunteerism and community action.

She appealed to Ghanaians, organisations, and stakeholders to support Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana’s efforts, saying “Together, we can create a clean and healthy environment for all.” By supporting initiatives like this, we can contribute to a larger movement towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Ghana.

In conclusion, the joint clean-up exercise undertaken by Youth Rise for Sanitation Ghana and its partners demonstrates the essence of volunteerism in driving positive change in our communities. By working together and taking ownership of our environment, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.
