John Dramani Mahama,  the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has promised free sanitary pads for girls in Basic and Senior Higher Schools across the country.

Mr Mahama noted that the initiative forms part of efforts to alleviate Ghanaians in the current economic hardships.

The pledge comes after public discourse and social commentary suggesting to government to eliminate import duty on imported sanitary pads.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s manifesto in Winneba,  the former President said proponents have argued that menstrual cycle comes with its own complications, therefore, imposing taxes on sanitary pad is unacceptable.

He was optimistic that this promise would  bring relief to all women, especially female students.

He made known the party’s commitment to establishing libraries in primary schools to promote a reading culture.

Aside from that, he said they will address the critical issue of textbook distribution and ensure the provision of relevant educational materials.
