Young people urged to develop their talents

Published

on

A Women’s advocate, Ms Agnes Opoku Sarpong, has called on young people, especially women, to explore and develop their talents as a pathway to personal growth and empowerment.

Harness your talents, pursue education, and uphold moral values as integral steps towards personal empowerment and societal advancement,” she said.
She said this during a ‘Ladies Night show’ o

rganised by the Fritz Ramseyer Memorial Congregation Young People’s Guild (YPG) of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Accra.

Ms Sarpong also a Journalist, speaking on the theme “Empowering Women, Enriching Lives” said empowering women extends beyond individual benefit, contributing to a more equitable and prosperous society.
Quoting Proverbs 31:25, she drew attention to the scripture’s depiction of a woman clothed with strength and dignity, capable of facing the future with confidence and wisdom.

She stressed that when women are empowered through education, economic resources, and leadership roles, they did not only enhance their own well-being but also strengthen their families and communities.

Ms Sarpong underscored the significant responsibility placed on women, particularly as primary caregivers and educators within families.

She highlighted the critical role of education in enabling women to impart essential knowledge and values to their children, thereby shaping future generations positively.

She urged the youth to reject social vices that could hinder their success, “I would encourage you to prioritise education and vocational training to acquire necessary skills and knowledge relevant to societal needs”.

She called on the government, organisations and individuals to create a conducive environment that supports women’s empowerment, enabling them to fulfil their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

Reflecting on spiritual principles, Ms Sarpong stressed on the importance of utilising one’s gifts to serve others and glorify God.

She urged women to uphold moral values, cautioning against behaviours such as premarital sex that could derail their aspirations and lead to unintended consequences like teenage pregnancy.

She reiterated that empowerment, particularly for women, involves recognising one’s calling and aligning life with godly attributes.

She encouraged all of them to embrace their identity in Christ and strive for personal excellence in every endeavour.

 Frankly speaking enough is enough

Published

on

A LOT of things are going on in this country which is hampering the congenial environment necessary for national cohesion, peace and development of this country.

A careful observation of issues and happenings in this country, called Ghana, paints a very disturbing picture of the future. Students are now attacking their teachers with impunity and there is no sign of remorse.

Again, students are bringing offensive weapons to school, and engaging in acts that defies logic. Teachers are impregnating students, lecturers are enticing students with grades to sleep with them, forgetting that they are sowing seeds of corruption in them.

I shudder to think of what will happen should these youth one day, occupy sensitive positions in government and financial institutions, like Minister of Finance, Bank Manager, and President etc.

I am advocating for a mandatory mental health screening every six months for every citizen of this country, beginning with the first gentleman of the land, since sickness is no respecter of persons, to the 2 year olds.

Those below two years can be excluded for the simple fact that they cannot cause harm on their own without the help of someone older. The insane behaviour is just becoming way too much and it is time to say enough is enough.

People go on demonstration to protest against vehicles knocking people down some dying others sustaining serious injury. They demand that a footbridge be constructed across the highway so pedestrians can safely cross over to the other side.

The government respond positively for once and the footbridge is constructed. Surprise, surprise, some people decides that they are not going to use the footbridge but to cross the highway at a risk to lives. Is thus madness or what?

Powerlines for high-voltage power transmission are supported by pylons which are mounted on concrete foundations and firmly held in place by bolts and nuts. Some very ‘sane’ people decides that the pylons no longer need the nuts to hold firm so they decided to remove them. The result was the toppling of the affected pylons and power outages for a large part of the country. If you tell me that people who do these things are not suffering from some mental problem, I would have a hard time believing this.

Guard rails along major highways in Accra are being removed and it is alleged that they are then sold as scrap. Roof of bridges have been chiseled to enable overloaded trucks to pass under without hindrance. Are the people doing these are of sound mind?

If we are not careful, the level of these insane acts will spread like wildfire. People deliberately build at Ramseyer Sites which are supposed to serve as water reservoirs to prevent flooding and the same people then turn around to complain when it rains and their houses gets flooded.

The Odaw River banks are cleared of unauthorised structures and what do we see now, the settlements are back and where do you think they will dispose their waste, the Odaw River.

A few days ago, the pavements and the streets were cleared of traders and it was a very refreshing site to behold, as pedestrians were able to move freely as well as vehicular traffic.

Surprise, surprise, a few days later, they are back on the pavements again. When shall we as a people, prioritise morality so that we shall make progress in making our city and environment clean?

When shall we say, enough is enough to the wrong attitudes of lack of patriotism and general lack of moral values so our nation can develop to its fullest potential?

The mental health landscape is evolving, and two groundbreaking technologies are at the forefront of this transformation. Emotional Surgery and Emotional Elysium, developed by Robert Ekow Grimmond-Thompson, offer a revolutionary approach to emotional healing and wellness. These innovations are poised to transform the way we address mental health, providing a new frontier in emotional healing and wellness.

The current state of Mental Health treatment

Traditional mental health treatments often focus on managing symptoms rather than addressing underlying emotional trauma. This approach can lead to a cycle of temporary relief followed by relapse, leaving individuals feeling frustrated and helpless.

Furthermore, the stigma surrounding mental health can prevent individuals from seeking help, exacerbating the issue.

The impact of emotional trauma

Emotional trauma can have a profound impact on an individual’s mental health, leading to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Traditional treatments often fail to address the underlying emotional trauma, instead focusing on managing symptoms.

 Lessons from Ukraine

Published

on

When Ukraine is mentioned these days, what readily comes to mind is war? Wars are not something that people relish, that is, rational people. It leaves a destruction so devastating in its wake and there is nothing nice to ever cherish about it.

In the First World War, about 16 million people were killed and in the Second World War at least 50 million people were killed. The destruction of the world economy cannot be underestimated. The social cost was also quite astronomical.

A lot of soldiers returned home with various degree of injury. Some soldiers were maimed for life, others had post-traumatic psychological issues and were never their former selves.

A little background to this Russia-Ukraine war will be helpful for this article. Ukraine used to be part of the Soviet Union, which was a union of several states including what is currently called Russia.

After the breakup of the then Soviet Union, Ukraine became an independent country. However, when Vladimir Putin became President of Russia, he as well as a section of the population, felt a certain loss of esteem and if you like, the glory associated with the former Soviet Union.

In 1994, the Western powers led by the US forced Ukraine to agree to hand over its nuclear weapons to Russia and they were to guarantee Ukraine’s protection in what is known as the Budapest Memorandum.

Things begun to get ugly when countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union, started to rid themselves of the influence of Russia. Putin was particularly upset when the pro-Russian president of Ukraine was overthrown through a popular uprising of the people.

He then engineered a separatist movement in the Eastern part of Ukraine and brought in Russian soldiers to support them to fight the Ukrainian Army. Russia later annexed Crimea, which is the Southern part of Ukraine, in 2014.

Finally, when the US and its allies did nothing, it emboldened Putin to attack Ukraine in February 2022, in what has become known as the Russia-Ukraine War.

Here comes the thrust of the issue at the core of this article, namely lessons from Ukraine. A lot of people were shocked to hear or read that, Russia had attacked Ukraine and their soldiers have crossed the border into Ukrainian territory and were heading towards Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.

I recall reading a story about former President Biden of USA sending a message to the Ukrainian President Zelensky that he is sending a plane to take him and his family out of Ukraine and his response has stuck with me.

He said “The fight is here; I need ammunition not a ride”. This bold statement invoked or rekindled the spirit of patriotism and galvanised the entire population into action, to defend their country with their lives.

Later reports that surfaced, indicated that Putin thought he could conquer Ukraine within a few days, but the war has entered its fourth year now, due to Ukrainians resolve to defend their country, at all cost.

The war between Ukraine and Russia is like the Biblical battle between David and Goliath and so Ukraine should not have survived the might of Russia at all but they had something that the Russians did not realise, which is determination, arising from a winning mindset.

The will to successfully defend their country gave them overcomer’s mindset and that is the lesson for us in this country. We need to have a mindset of overcoming challenges and the sky will be our limit. God bless
