President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday joined Asanteman to celebrate the first Akwasidae festival in the year 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
Akwasidae is a sacred traditional festival celebrated by the Ashanti people of Ghana where they honour their ancestors, seek their blessings while the Asantehene sits in state to receive homage from the people.
President Mahama’s presence at the festival marked his first official visit to the Ashanti Region after a decisive victory in the 2024 elections that has seen his non-consecutive second term in office as Head of State.

An atmosphere often charged with vibrant traditional drumming and dancing, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Ashanti people saw the Asantehene perform customary rites to promote the well-being and prosperity of his people.
As usual, kente was in vogue capturing the attention of some foreigners who were attending the highly patronised festival for the first time.

Delivering his speech, President Mahama, bemoaned the dire economic crisis Ghana was currently facing which required collective efforts to salvage the situation.
According to him, “this particular crisis is characterised by a high rate of inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default which has shut us out of the international credit market.”
The President thus appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to leverage his influence in supporting efforts to address the economic challenges of the country.
Praising the Asantehene for his pivotal role in fostering economic growth in his previous administration, President Mahama described the current situation as “more daunting challenge than we have ever experienced in our history.”
“Your Royal Majesty, as a former president between 2013 and 2017, we faced macroeconomic instability and I remember some of the times we had obstacles in our way of bringing stability to our economy and restoring economic growth.
I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smoothen the path so that it could open up the path towards prosperity and progress and anytime I called on you, you didn’t hesitate. And I would like to thank you for your cooperation I enjoyed with you at that time.”
“As we have inherited a difficult economic situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time. And I know that anytime I call on you, you will not hesitate so that we work together to put our nation back on its feet.”
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to advancing development in the Ashanti Region, pledging to complete stalled and abandoned infrastructure projects, particularly in the healthcare sector.
On his part, Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urged President Mahama to fulfil all promises made to Ghanaians.
The Paramount Chief of Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, speaking on behalf of the Asantehene, stated; “We would like you to please remember always the undertakings and promises you have made. I implore you to fulfil all your promises to us in the great Asante Kingdom.
“We have absolute trust in you that you shall not let us down. All ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom and across all kingdoms, you will fulfil them.”

The Mayor, who was confirmed by the Assembly last week, noted that as a young person, he could not be associated with failure.
He noted that the city must undergo significant transformation, insisting that “whatever we are doing must change.”
He aligned his agenda with the national vision by recalling the President’s remarks, saying that just as Ghana was undergoing a reset, every part of the country, including Accra, would also be reset.
As part of his first-day activities, Hon. Allotey toured the Assembly’s departments and units to gain first-hand insight into their operational mandates, ongoing projects, and implementation status
He visited key administrative and executive offices, including the Coordinating Director’s Office, the Director in Charge of Operations, and the Office of the Presiding Member, as well as engaged with staff from the Finance, Accounting, Budgeting, Procurement, and Cash Offices to better understand the Assembly’s fiscal structure.
Departments such as Human Resources, Planning, Business Development, and Audit also had the opportunity to brief the Mayor on their mandates and current operational status.
The tour further included visits to units overseeing internal services and public engagement, such as records management, stores, the MIS and CCTV monitoring units, the Public Affairs Directorate, the Client Service Centre, the Marriage Unit, Transport Office, Facility Management Unit, the Migrant Desk, and the Library.
The day also saw courtesy visits from various stakeholders, including traditional leaders, among others.
Mr.Allotey, a seasoned entrepreneur and logistics expert, brings over a decade of experience in the real estate, petroleum, and transportation sectors.

The Head of Office and Representative of UNESCO to Ghana, Mr. Edmond Moukala, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to explore strategic areas of collaboration aimed at advancing inclusive education, gender equality, and youth empowerment.
The discussions focused on promoting educational opportunities for young mothers, empowering them to return to school, and addressing the persistent stigma that limits their ability to thrive.
Both parties recognised the importance of inclusive policies and interventions that allow young mothers to pursue their education without discrimination.
Other key areas of interest included the provision of training in entrepreneurship and digital skills for women and girls. These efforts are expected to enhance economic empowerment and promote self-reliance among women.
The delegation also discussed in-depth issues related to gender-based violence and the urgent need for stronger advocacy and preventive measures. There was mutual agreement on the importance of integrating gender and reproductive health education into all educational curricula to help foster safer and healthier learning environments for children and adolescents.
The engagement further highlighted the need to promote girls’ participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and support women in the media space, thereby opening doors for leadership and representation in key sectors.
The Minister acknowledged that the Ministry, being a cross-cutting institution, works collaboratively with nearly all other Ministries to ensure that the needs of women, children, and other vulnerable populations are mainstreamed into national development.
She noted that UNESCO’s support aligns strongly with the government’s broader development goals.
She emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to championing the President’s priorities which include: gender equality, inclusive education, youth empowerment, and poverty reduction.
Also present at the meeting was the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah.

The Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, on Thursday, May 8, 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the National Police Headquarters.

Also present at the meeting were some members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) and the Director of Investigations at the OSP, Mr. Emmanuel Basintale.
